Having checked out some reviews on DSLRs that shoot video, I think I'd wait a bit - the features are too rudimentary for now. No AF while shooting, lack of effective image stability (even with IS glass). The actual quality may be good, but using it isn't going to be easy - for now, at least.
Of course, that's what I know based off the D90 and 5d Mark II. The 500D may be different, but I doubt it for now.Last edited by skeuos; Mar 26th, 2009 at 09:21 PM.

I did hear about the D90, but didnt realize the 5d Mark II had video options.
I think you are right about waiting.
I'm guessing the video is only good for quick shoots like I might have needed for fun while I was out doing white water rafting shots last weekend.
I ended up using my cell phone just to capture one kayaker in motion.
I think even though it would be great to have an ALL in one, the quality for every feature wont be there just like most ALL in One printers, can't expect archival quality.Pbase.com/ReflectionsbyRuth

Interesting note - in order to keep file size small, the D90 drops every 9th (or 10th) line, while the 5D Mark II doesn't. So video quality (and resulting stills if you're so inclined) is a bit better in the 5D Mark II.
But the D90 does allow you to change the aperture while recording, which I believe the 5D Mark II doesn't. Win some, lose some, right Canon?
I wonder where the 500D will fall.
In the meantime, Pentax just announced a medium-format equivalent - the 645D - hitting approx 30megapixels, due out next year at a fraction of the cost of a Mamiya - http://www.ok1000pentax.com/2009/03/...-pie-2009.html .
And now I need to wipe the drool off my keyboard.

glad to see you've researched it in detail more than I had the time to
Sounds interesting.
I dont drool much these days on bigger and better camera equipment
