Memory card speed

I am planning to purchase a new memory card for my Canon XTi. My question is how fast of a card is actually usable by the camera? I'm not interested in transfer speed to the computer since I just start it and walk away, but I would like to have the fastest card that utilizes the speed for burst photography. Also are there any difference in the top brands?

I use SanDisk Ultra II cards. A standard speed card would probably be fast enough for me in the studio. For sports we use SanDisk Extreme IVs.

There's a test someone has done with all of the ards in all of the DSLRs, so you can see which indicidual card models work best with the camera's actual controller.

I only came across it a couple of days ago on another forum - I'll try and find it again and post.

Are you talking different brand names of memory cards or different types/standards of memory cards? Within a specific type (i.e you aren't changing the camera) there should be no changes in speed other than the size of the picture you are writing to it. It's actually not relevant the card you use.
