firing strobes with digital rebel xt

I just purchased some monolite x200 lights and I can't get the strobes to fire unless I manually press the button on the lights. Isnt there a setting I can use on my camera to remotely fire them? I can't find any info in the manual and I haven't really done any photography with separate flashes/strobes before. please help! thanks

If your strobes are set up as a slave, you can trigger them using the pop-up flash on your camera. The paperwork that came with the strobes should tell you if they have a slave setting.
Otherwise you need to get a PC cable. This cable plugs into the PC jack on your camera on one end, and the strobe at the other. I would start off with something around 12'. They can never be too long. If they are too short, you will be tripping over them.
Everybodies got to stand for something, I stand to pee.

Thanks. Unfortunately, the lights didnt come with a manual. They are pretty old and I haven't been able to find a replacement manual either. I am hesitant to attach them to my camera since I am afraid I'm goign to fry it (again, I don't really know what I'm doing ) so I guess I'll have to keep looking. thanks
