Hi
Have u read about the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Lens?
I have the same one and its pretty decent for portraits and general photos. It has F2.8 which means that it is fast for most indoor conditions and u wont need a tripod. The pictures are tack sharp most of the times.
Another candidate is the Sigma 18-125mm but its not as fast as the above and u will soon outgrow it.
The Canon EF 50mm F1.8 II is good too. But it is only good for portraits. The best of 3 in terms of image quality.
I hope it helps.
Thanks
Leo.

Several folks on another board are wont to mention the Canon 28-135 IS. WHile I don't have one, I does have a good reputation. That one will cost over $400 at either B&H or Adorama.
If you're not inclined to spend that much, consider the Canon 28-105 f/3.5-4.5. It can be had the above stores for a little over $200. I'm thinkin' I'll probably order on this spring. This one has a reputation as a real gem.

Curtbob is right, a really decent lens would be the Canon 28-135 IS. its a great walk around lens. The tamron stated above is nice but lacks the zoom and the IS both are pretty close in price. I used the 28-135 for over a year and it was hard to sell it but I needed money to fund more lenses.
