300D Standard Lens Defect?

In using the standard lens that came with my new 300D it seems to work ok, but the action is rough. It almost feels like there is fine sand in the zoom mechanism, or like the internal machining is not smoothly finished. Is this typical, or do I have a problem?

If it is a problem, what is the best way to proceed? I purchased the kit at Cosco and do not want to take the entire thing back, just the lens. Or can I just return the lens alone to Canon for replacement? What kind of service have people gotten from Canon?

Never having needed Canon service I'm not sure but I would imagine that if you have a receipt for the 300D kit you would only need to return the lens. How long have you had it ? I guess it would be easier to justify to them that it is a Canon problem the earlier you identify it to them.
On a different matter, my 18-55 lens and others that I have seen have been very free moving, almost to the point that they feel "loose".
