    Lenses

Hi all. I am new here and just wanting some opinions on lenses. I currently have an eos300d wich i love and have a borrowed canon 70-210 lese as well as my 18-55.

I was luck enough to recive a cosina 28-300 lense from my parents when they went overseas and picked it up cheap.

i am now giving the canon lense back and am looking at buying a new 1. or maybe 2, but i cant decide what.

I thought i wanted a fish eye even though i wouldnt use it much it could be a fun lense. Just wondering if ppl here have used any of them on a 300d.

The other thing i was thinking of was a wide angle lense but the 18 gets a fair chunk of picture in so i am unsure.

Another lense i was told would be really good is the EF50 f/1.4 or ef 50 f/1.8 II. wondering who has used these and what they think?

then there is also the macro lenses wich would be cool as well but i dont think i would have much use for them.

maybe i should sell the cosina and get me a really good canon telephoto zoom lense and a good smaller 1 to fill the gap.

Opinions would be good here as i cant decide. There are to many choices so any experiances you have had with lenses would be good to here.

Fisheye lenses can be cool to play around with. I have an old Canon 15mm FD lense that I tried out on my 300D with an adaptor. The optics on the adaptor were just plain BAD. With the smaller digital format, the fisheye effect wasn't so prevelent. I just stick to slide film with my old AT1 when I want to play with this lense, and scan them into my computer. I will try to dig up some comparison photos and post them when I get a chance. The real benefit of the 180 degree (corner to corner on the 15mm) is lost with the small format (however your feet aren't in the picture). Now the 7mm (I think) FD lense produced a circle on the 35mm format, so maybe a lense like this may work on the smaller digital format. I would try it first and see, I have no experience with that lense.

The 50mm 1.8 II sells pretty cheap here in the USA, and I picked one up. I only used it once, and happy with the results. I also have the 85mm 1.8 USM, which I really like, but cost about 4 times the 50mm.

    Thanks for that paul.

i think i will run with the 50mm prim lense and sell my 300mm cosina lense and get me a good telephoto lense. I was playing with one after i made the post and thought wow.

I have talked to a few ppl that have used a fish eye one the 300d and none of them are reall happy with them.

I posted a couple of fisheye shots in my gallery. Waterpump was shot with a 35mm camera, and Barn Thru Wheel was shot using the FD lense with an adaptor on a D-Rebel. The fisheye effect is really noticeable on the land in Waterpump, while you need to look at the spokes on Wheel to see it. There is a hotspot in the center of Wheel, that on this photo is less noticeable than on others. The hotspot was from the FD-EF adaptor. It was a visible defect in the optics.

The 50 mm 1.8 is a super all around lens.I have a few shots in my gallery with this lens at night. This bad boy can focus in almost total darkness and the bokeh that you get at 1.8 is incredible. For a prime lens it is sweet.Best lens I think I have had so far would be the 70-200mm 2.8 L IS. It is and I think will always be my favourite lens.
