    Bracketing

    Hi Guys
Can anyone tell me what is the purpose of bracketing ie; why would yo want to take 3 shots of a subject one correctly exposed, one over exposed and one under exposed. The only reason I can think of is to manipulate the desired frame. Am I correct??
    Great site..many thanks Woody

Braketing has a couple of uses. One is when you think you have a particularly trickey exposure problem (ie.. backlit subject), you can take a braketed set of exposures to insure getting the correct one. The other is mainly a carry over from film and that is that a slight underexposure can increase color saturation. With digital and RAW formats and the use of computers, bracketing has a limited use.

    Thanks for that Colin
I seem to recall something on that basis with 35mm in so much as that now we have the facility to adjust before we print.

    another use for bracketing...

Woody: Bracketing might also be useful to extend the dynamic range of the picture. You can use the regular exposure as your base, the overexposed one to reveal shadow detail and the underexposed to prevent highlights. This approach assumes you use a tripod to shot the three frames, since they should be perfectly aligned.

Now, if you are using RAW... you need only one photo. You can "make" the under and over exposed ones on your software.
