I'd like to know the technique too. Is it a straight photo or two manipulated. Either way, it's interesting and congrats on the win.

it isn't a water drop, nor is it a composite of two images. it's a soap bubble, perched on a stalk of grass. the only PP done on this image was cropping, and some adjustment to levels, contrast and sharpness.
i was walking behind a young woman and her boyfriend at a local park, and she was blowing bubbles. most of them drifted off or popped, but this one lit on a stalk of grass without popping. just for a lark, i thought i'd try to get a photo of it, so i hurried up, composed the shot, and got off 3 frames before it burst. i took the shot from about 6 feet away with a Canon 30D and Sigma EX 80-400 lens at 350mm, handheld at 1/250, f5.6.
the background is blurred out because i shot it wide open from a relatively short distance, and the DOF for the lens i used at that range, zoom and aperture is just a few inches. in reality, that dark area is a mass of very dark green blackberry bushes about 15 feet behind the bubble, which were in shadow at the time. the sun was coming from the left side, refracting through the bubble (hence the name) to cause the "belt of stars" effect. the reason you don't see me in the reflection is because i'm far enough away, and the bubble is small enough (<1" diameter, you can tell by the size relative to the grass) that the curvature of the reflection acts like a super-fish-eye lens, and encompasses the whole area around me. i'm just an almost invisible dot in the middle.Last edited by squirl033; Dec 11th, 2006 at 07:50 PM.
any camera will record what you see... but YOU have to SEE!

wow then i apologise, i must say im very impressed. Thought it looked very photoshopped, because of no reflection and the sheer perfect circle.Originally posted by squirl033

Congrats
A great RPRT shot. So many times I find the shot and don't have my camera. Great opportunistic eye.
